The heat was oppressive, the players were hot, the golf was magnificent very golfy, yes it was the 2022 Summer Very Old Masters !
The turnout was very promising and included the mighty Pete La Freak finally playing outside of the Dorset boundaries and the Global Traveller that is Tony Dearsley, recently of Spain, Portugal, France and all points European. Jack Dearsley flew in from Manchester, Ian Waterhouse was bussed in from Lincolnshire, Joe Dearsley and Allan Boothroyd came on the Tube and it was just a short walk for Dougie Ogilvy. Clive Dearsley was transported from “The Land of Supreme Golfers” !!
The 8 were ready. ( It was at this stage that they realised there should be 9 or even 10 but after a short but fruitless search for Bob and Jamie Dearsley the Tournament got underway.)
Battle commenced with Waterhouse, Jack Dearsley and elder brother Clive pilling in big front 9 scores. Waterhouse fell away on the back 9 , Jack Dearsley hung in there but could not stand the heat and 2022 Bournemouth VOMs Champion Clive Dearsley pilled in 22 points to take the inaugural VOMs Summer Challenge.
Joe, Allan and Dougie Dearsley struggled with the concrete fairways and punishing jungle which surrounds the well prepared course. Pete The K who was not on his normal sparkling form was distracted with electric car issues and Tony PapaD was pre occupied with travel blog writing which had a major impact on his game.
Arrangements for 2023 VOM’s are still in the negotiation stages but there are rumours of a Spanish Autumn clash and either a London or Lincolnshire spring event.
