It is now 8 years since we lost the mighty Peter Crowhurst and The Celebration Trophy has now been competed for 30 times with 15 different winners, including Nigel Carby 5 times and Chilly Entwistle 4 times, and how pleased we are for them !
Friday 28th July 2023 the most recent event was held at Oakmere Golf Club, somewhere near Newark, with 20 keen, talented and mostly sober sportsmen vying for the Trophy.
Some veteran names were in the field, Carby himself, the ever present Chilly, 3 times winners Hoppy Dearsley and The Big K Shorrocks and 2 time winners Biffa Amos and Sir Roger Large were all in the mix but this year a number of rookie players joined the throng and challenged the old guard.
After a tricky front 9 Chilly, Mick R and Nigel were challenging for the lead with Brian S. two shots ahead of the field. As they turned for home the normally stalwart Nigel Carby and old steady himself Mick R fell apart in spectacular style. Danny Large had a go with a stunning back 9 but came up short and settled for a gallant 3rd place. Chilly hung in there but could not catch Brian who held on by 1 point to card 36 points. A PCC winner at his first attempt.
Although the laughingly called “Officials” searched high and low for a rule or basically any reason to stop a new comer winning, no reasonable excuse could be found and Brian Shakespeare stepped forward to raucous applause to collect the PCC Trophy:
“Have I won then ?” Brain addressed the Players, mostly now calmed following the downing of the posh lager which had become available. “Indeed You Have !” cried Nigel whilst presenting the newly redesigned Trophy.
Much applause and merriment followed and a good time was had by all.
The Peter Crowhurst Celebration Trophy will be once again up for grabs in Bridlington in September 2023.
