The sun shone down on the heroic group as they shuffled meaningfully onto the first tee at the infamous Flamborough Head Golf Club. The men from Newark stood proud as the Rugby (and surrounding areas) players exited the bar and took their positions.
“This is our year !” said MK Seve Chairman and SeveBet CEO. Last year was a one off, these new chaps from the North won’t pull it off again, Mark my words !”
Later that day MK Seve could not be found for comment as John Miles with 37 points in the bag held the Flamborough Headbanger Trophy high with cries of “Get in there !”
The first day was over and Big K Shorrocks and young Simon Locock had bravely challenged for supremacy but fell just 2 points short. MK Seve himself had challenged early on but slid into a gallant 5th place.
Onward to the joys of Scarborough South and a tad of rain as the 16 stepped out on Sunday morning. Simon, again , challenging boldly , former champion Big Tony and Kibworth’s own Aldo were all pushing for victory but there he was top of the tree for the second day , John Miles banging in 37 points in spectacular fashion.
“I wouldn’t say that conditions were poor, I would say conditions were desperately poor !” said Sir Roger Large from his luxury caravan later in the day.
Monday morning arrived with a fine outlook and the promise of sunshine.
This was the final humiliation challenge ! Filey Golf Club lay in front of the talented 16.
4 and a half hours later John Miles was amongst 3 Players on 36 points with Big Tony and Sir Roger , but no victory for these boys. MK Seve thrust himself into 3rd with 37 and Big K Shorrocks thought Victory was his with a 41 point round but No !
It was as spectacular as the Phoenix rising from the ashes (just like in Harry Potter without Dumbledore although Max does a pretty good impression) it was the mighty Tom Nicholson who carved out 42 points to take the day and The Peter Crowhurst Celebration Trophy !
The Bridlington Admiral’s Cup was already in the hands of John Miles following his magnificent opening 2 rounds beating Kevin S. by 6 points with Tony Bryan and MK Seve carving out third and fourth.
“Can I just say , well done me.” said the humble John Miles as he held the coveted boat to his chest.
Most of the assemble crowd (mostly Newark based) roared their approval and the celebrations commenced.
“Next year boys” finalised MK Seve as he left the club en-route for his Rugby mansion “Next Year !”
